We have chosen three representative outfits for the boys, but there was a range of other possible styles. We have chosen the outer clothing here as most representative of what three middle-class boys might have worn.
Tom wears an Oliver Twist suit wiyth knee-length short pants that button on to his short-sleeved waist -
white with blue trimming at the sleeves and collar. The waist opens
with buttons half way down the front of the chest on a blue background
that is part of the collar trim. Tom also wears a string tie with
enlarged decorative ends. With his white three-quarter socks with
stripes around the top, he wears closed-toe, single-strap sandals that
fasten with a side button. The short trousers button on to the waist
with six white buttons (two in front, two in back, and two on the
sides). The trousers have shallow turn-up cuffs around the bottom of
the legs. The white waist with blue trim is meant to be worn with the
matching blue short trousers, the top and bottom making up an
informal, summer-weight suit for semi-casual wear during warm weather.
