Eaton's Younger Boys' Suits (Winter 1927)

Figure 1.--Eatons offered a range of younger boys' suits in 1927. Here we see a sailor suit and a suit which did not have lapels and buttoned at the collar. Curiously Eatons did not indicated what the style was called. This was a popular boys' style in the erarly 20th century, but as far as we can tell, dif not have a proper name.

Middy Model Suit

Left Side of the page; First column. Sailor suits of course had been a standard for decades. They were still worn by Canadian boys in the 1920s, although pre-school and primary age boys. Thhis suit was made for boys up to age 10, but I think it would have been worn mostly by younger primary-age boys. The ad copy read, "Middy Model Suit of All-Wool Blue Serge. Sizes 21 to 26-inch chest, for ages 3 to 8 years. $3.50. 94-577 Popular Middy Suit in good weight All-Wool Blue Cheviot English Serge. Middy is trimmed at collar, shield and cuffs with two rows of white braid and is finished with breast pocket and Black tie. Pants are made in regular knee-length style. A smart and inexpensive little suit."

English Brown Tweed Suit

Second column: The ad copy read, "Special Value English Brown Tweed $3.65. Sizes 21 to 28-inch chest, for ages 3 to 8 years. 94-570 Strongly-made, serviceably-lined suit in fancy mixture Brown English tweed that will give satisfaction in wear. A low-priced suit of splendid value. Tailored in the dip yoke, inverted pleat model that is so suitable to smaller boys. [HBC note: It is not immediayely apparent to us why this styling is so suitable to younger boys.] Material used is of close weave and of Wool and Cotton mixture." These collar buttoning suits were opular in the early 20th century. Interestingly there does not seem to have been a proper name for these suits. The Englisg in the name seems to refer to the tweed and ant not the suit style. And it does not seem to have been used in other catlogs. Note the string tassels at the collar neck.
