Eaton's Short Pants Suits (1934-35)

Figure 1.--Eatons offered short pants suits for boys in its 1934-35 Fall and Winter catalog. These are for Canadian boys from 4 to 10 years old. Notice that the suits are double breasted, worn with adult-looking collared shirts with neckties and ribbed long stockings. The short pants suits were done in both brown tweed and blue cheviot. Brown and blue wee popular colors for boys. Older Canadian boys usually wore knickers, breeches, or, after about age 15 or 16, long trousers in the mid-1930s.

Fox’s All-Wool Blue Cheviot

I believe Fox was a mill manufacturing fabric. The ad copy read, "$4.25 delivered. Sizes 22 to 28, for 4 to 10 years. 94 M-1300. Every mother likes to see her boy dressed in Blue. These Junior style Suits are cut from the well-known Fox’es All-Wool Blue Cheviot that looks well and gives excellent wear. Cut on double-breasted lines, with Rayon-faced Satin linings. Knee pants are Cotton lined and have three pockets, belt loops and fly front. Price, delivered ... $4.25. 94 M-1301. With extra knee pants. Price, delivered ... $5.25."

Color

Brown was a popular color for Canadian and American boys. But blue was the most popular color. Notice the reference in the Eaton's ad copy about mothers liking to see their sons dressed in blue. I am not entirely sure why this was, but navy or dark blue became the standard conservative style for boy's suits in Canada. Boys would wear these suits for formal occassions. This was also the cae for the United States where black was also worn. This was not the same for other counties. In Britain, for example, grey was very popular.
