American Catalogs and Advertisements: Suits (1902)

Figure 1.--Sears in 1902 offered many suits for boys 8-15 years of age. Here is a double breasted kneepants suit done in a muted green and brown plaid out of cheviot material.

There were vestee and Norfolk suits for younger boys. We notice both single and double breasted suits for older boys. Sears offered kneepants suits for boys up to age 15-16. Cheviot appears to have been a popular fabric. Green and brown were popular colors, often done in muted patterns.

Younger Boys Suits

Younger boys suits were often done in sizes 3 to 8 years. We note vestee and Norfolk styling. They seem to be most single breasted styles and done with knee pants.

Sears Vestee and Norfolk suits

Sears offered vestee and Norfolk suits in 1902. A vestee suit was a suit that had a matching or coordinated vest (waistcoat). One vestee suit had a dickey in addition to a vest. The vestee suits were done in sizes 3-8 years. The Norfolk suit was done in sizes 4-10. Cheviot was a popular fabric as was cassimere. Brown seems to have bee as especially popular color.

Older Boys Suits

Sears Fancy Mixed Cheviot Two-Piece KneePants Suit

Here we have a standard two piece double-breasted kneepants suit (figure 1). Notice how high up the jacket the lapels are cut. Muted patterened suits were much more common than solid colors. The caption is "Fancy green and brown mixed cheviot in two-piece knee pants suit". The mixed in the ad copy means that green and brown were mixed in the plaid. I think fancy means that there was a pattern, but here are not sure. The ad copy reads, "This closely woven all wool cheviot is a very desirable fabric for boys' clothing and you will be surely be pleased if tou send us your order for a suit of this material. The color is a pretty brown and green with a hair line over-plaid in red. We are not exagerating when we say thsat it is as good if not better, than any $5.00 shown in retail clothing stores. The coat is cut in double breasted style like ilklustration, is double stitched all around, thoroughly well tailored and neatly trimmed. Pants are made with double seat and knees, the usual number of pockets and patent buttons on fly and waistband. No. 40T802 Price for boys' teo piece knee pants suit, ages 8-15 years .... $3.50".
