Un bon petit diable (A Good Little Devil) was written by the Countess of Ségur (1799-1894). I'm not sure about the boy's name. It is actually not about a French boy, but a Scottish orphan, raised by a severe woman. The "good little devil" is a bit naughty and does gets back at peoole who annoy him. His turbulent naturalness and his sharp imagination push him to play rotten tricks on all those which bother him. The countess of Ségur wrote many books for children: Small model girls, Memories of a donkey, The Dourakine General. I'm not sure who illustrated Un bon petit diable for her. The story Un bon petit diable has been made into a movie.

Note the title of the book "Small model girls" (Les petites filles modèles) means ideal or very well brought up and behaved girls. The same term wa also used for boys les petits garçons modèles. This term was used in the 19th century and coninued into the 20th century. A French readr writes, "One can speak much more about this topic. For instance the rules concerning the white gloves; the nanny and her charge. (Almost of my friends had a nanny, she cared for the younger and older children. When the younger child reached 5-6 years old
she left the house. In middle class families, often the nanny
was also the maid. This was the case at my parents home; but not at my uncle home. The attitude of the girls who had their own rules should also be mentiond."

malicieux et ne se laisse pas faire. Son naturel turbulent et sa vive imagination le poussent à jouer des tours pendables à tous ceux qui l’ennuient. La comtesse de Ségur a écrit beaucoup de livres pour enfants : "Les petites filles modèles", "Les
mémoires d'un âne", "Le général Dourakine", etc. Je ne connais pas l'auteur du dessin.
