Dating Studio Cabinet Card Mounts: Brown Mounts--Chronology

Figure 1.-- This studio cabinet portrait shows Niran Bates Pope. Niran was born in 1879, so this portrait was taken about 1882-83. Niran was the son of Charles Henry Pope and Elizabeth Bates, daughter of Dr. Niran Bates. The family lived in Maine. The portrait does not have any studio information. The back is also brown.

We are not yet sure of the chronology, but have begin to archive a number of dated images. We are not yet entirely sure about the 1870s. We think they first appeared in the 1870s, at least in large numbers. We notice many examples from the 1880s. A good example is Niran Bates Pope in 1883 (figure 1). This one had a brown back without any studio information. Another good example is an American card of the Hale children made in America during 1886 on the previous page. We note fewer dark brown mounts in the 90s when light-colored mounts become popular. The dark brown card on another page was dated 1891.
