Cowbridge Grammar School Uniform

Figure 1.--This is part of the 1954 Cowbridge Grammar school portrait. The boys wear the same style uniform as the school uniform commonly worn in England during the 1950s. As was common at the time, the junior boys wear short trousers.

We have few details about schoolwear or uniforms during the schools long history. We do have information on the school uniform during the 1950s. It appear to have been the same as the school uniform commonly worn in England during the 1950s. Presumably there was a required cap, although the boys do not wear it for the class portrait in 1954. The boys wear a blazer although I do not see a badge on the vreast pocket. I'm not sure about the color. The junior boys, as was common at the time, wear grey short trousers with turn-over-top kneesocks. The grey kneesocs have a colored top cuff, presumably in the same color as the blazer. A few boys wear plain grey kneesocks or even patterned top kneesocks rather than the regulation school kneesocks.

Historical Uniforms

We have few details about schoolwear or uniforms during the schools long history. As the school was operating in the early 17th century, there must have been quite a range of different fashions worn at the school. We do not know if there was an actual uniform in the early years of the school or when a uniform was first established.

The 1950s

We do have information on the school uniform during the 1950s. It appear to have been the same as the school uniform commonly worn in England during the 1950s. We ar not sure when this uniform was first adopted, but looks like a post-World War II (1939-45) style.

1954

A portrait of the school in 1954 shows the school uniform (figure 1). A few boys wear plain grey kneesocks or even rather old-fashioned patterned top kneesocks rather than the regulation school kneesocks.

Figure 2.--This is part of the 1957 Cowbridge Grammar School first year class portrait. The boys wear basically the same uniform worn in 1954, although some of the junior boys have begun to wear long trousers. The kneesocks are also slightly different.

1957

A 1957 portrait shows the uniform. It looks little changed from 1957. The one difference we note is that some of the junior boys have begun to wear long trousers. I'm not sure what the school rule was. Also the kneesocks have changed. Rather than a solid colored top cuff, the kneesocks in 1957 had two colored bands. The old fashioned patterened top kneesocks seen in 1954 are no longer worn. The portrait we have, unlike the 1954 full school portrait, looks to be a class portrait. It looks to be the first year boys. It looks to be a slightly more inforal portrait. All the boys wear their blazers, which do not have a badge on the breat pocket. We still do not know the color of the blazer. Many boys, however, do not wear their ties. It looks to have been a warm summer term day. One boy even does not wear kneesocks and has come to school in sandals. Even so one boy wears a jumper (sweater) with trim in the school colors.
