English School Uniform: Individual School -- Leigh Grammar School

Figure 1.--A reader has provided this photograph of Leigh school children on an educational visit to London. They may be from the Leigh Grammar Schools. The students are on the terrace at the House of Commons. This over looks the River Thames. They seem to be writing their journal about the events they have experienced. Put your cursor on the image to see more of the group.

Leigh is a city in Lacashire. We do not have any information on the history of the Leigh Grammar School. There appears to have been both a boys and girls grammar. I'm not sure to what extent the two schools cooperated. There does not seem to be school internet sites, but there are references to the school (presumably the boys' grammar in several biographies. A few former students complain that music was discouraged. Hopefully HBC readers will know more about the school. They surely are from the same schools. he uniforms and fact they are all carring out a similar assignment suggest this. The boys wear the same destinctive caps and the hat babnd on the firl's hats seem to pick up the same stripe. The boys and girls seem to be mostly wearing the same uniforms. Notice the knickers. That seems somewhat unusual for the 1930s. Also note that a few boys still wear Eton collars.
