English School Uniform: Suffield Park School--Headwear

Figure 1.--This photograph shows the different hadwear worn boys at Suffield Park School. Note that most boys wear peaked school caps. The color looks to be the same, but there are small stylistic differences. A few boys wear boaters.

We note two different styles of headwear, peaked school caps and boaters. There are no headwear styles besides the peaked school caps and boaters. Many boys wear peaked caps. All the boys wore headwear, and most boys wore peaked school caps. These caps are all solid colors. They look to be the same color. There is, however, no badge. A few of the boys wore boaters. The colors of the boaters and hat bands varied. This appears to have been a matter of personal choice. There does not appear to have been any school rule. Some of the younger boys wear the boaters, but this differentiation does not appear to be clear cut. Notice that the boys wearing boaters wear them them fullseated with the brim horizontal with the ground. There is only one exception. One boy to the right wears his boater back on his head, as many younger boys wore wide-brimmed sailor hats.

Headwear Styles

We note two different styles of headwear, peaked school caps and boaters. There are no headwear styles besides the peaked school caps and boaters.

Peaked Caps

Many boys wear peaked caps. All of the boys wore headwear and most of the boys wore peaked school caps. The caps are basically the same, but we note small differences in the size of the crown and the shape of the brim or pek. These caps are all solid colors. They look to be the same color. We are unsure what color the caps were. There is, however, no badge. Most boys wear them similrly, but a few boys have pulled the brim well down over their foreheads.

Boaters

A few of the boys wore boaters. THe colors of the boaters and hat bands varied. This appears to have been a matter of personal choice. There does not appear to have been any school rule. Some of the younger boys wear the boaters, but this differentiation does not appear to be clear cut. Notice that the boys wearing boaters wear them them fullseated with the brim horizontal with the ground. There is only one exception. One boy to the right wears his boater back on his head, as many younger boys wore wide-brimmed sailor hats.

Other Styles

There are no headwear styles besides the peaked school caps and boaters.

School Rules

We are unsure about the school rules. We suspect that because all the nboys have headwear, this was required. We do not know if the type of headwear was entirely optional. We note that the boys have only two styles. Perhaps they could choose or perhaps both were required for different occassions. If this was the cases, however, one would think thar one would have been selected for the portrait. Perhaps the school rule was in the process of changing.
