French School Uniform:  Early 20th Century--Primary Schools

Figure 1.--The children were photographed in 1908 at the primary school in the small village of Rustrel. Almost all the boys wear dark smocks. Click on the image to learn more about the school.

Many primary school children wore smocks in the eraly 20th century. We know that smocks were introduced by the new French Republic in the 1870s. We have seen some French primary schools in the 1890s where only the younger boys wore smocks. We note that in the 1900s that at some primary schools virtually all of the boys wore smocks. Apparently there was considerable variation from school to school. We do not yet know what the regulations or Government policy was or why there were variations from school to school. We also do not yet have information on a sufficent number of schools to be able to understand the overall trends during this period.
