Geman School Clothes:  First Day--Unidentified Boy, 1910s

Figure 1.--This German boy wearing a kneepants sailor suit for his first day of school. It is a non-traditional kneepants sailor suit without the "V" collar. He wears a soft cap with streamer and dark long stockings. He has a very large gift cone ("zuckertute").

This German boy wearing a kneepants sailor suit for his first day of school. It is a non-traditional kneepants sailor suit without the "V" collar. Sailor suits were very common schoolwear for younger boys. Many class portraits show many youger boys wearing sailor suits. He wears a soft cap which is difficult to make out in any detail, except for the streamer. He wears dark long stockings with his kneepants. The boy has a very large gift cone ("zuckertute"). He has a book bag on his back, leaving his arms free for his cone. He is wearing his back pack and posing with his "present". This was a studio shot with, I'm sure, very proud parents looking on.The portrait is undated, but the clothes and photography suggest the 1910s, probably before World War I.

First Day

The boy has a very large gift cone ("zuckertute"). He has a book bag on his back, leaving his arms free for his cone. He is wearing his back pack and posing with his "present". This was a studio shot with, I'm sure, very proud parents looking on.

Chronology

The portrait is undated, but the clothes and photography suggest the 1910s, probably before World War I.

Hair Cut

A HBC reader believes that the boy may have a shaved haircut. If not totally shaved, at least the sides seem to be. Hard to tell without a better image.

Cap

He wears a soft cap which is difficult to make out in any detail, except for the streamer.

Sailor Suit

This German boy wearing a kneepants sailor suit for his first day of school. It is a non-traditional kneepants sailor suit without the "V" collar. Sailor suits were very common schoolwear for younger boys. Many class portraits show many youger boys wearing sailor suits. He appears to have a somewhat larger and floppy dark colored bow than the usual scarves worn with sailor suits. Also his sailor suit may be double breasted by the buttons I can make out. I only say that because it appears that he is wearing his sailor top closed and I can discern a rather large button on the boy's left which I think indicates it is double breasted. HBC has not noted a sailor suit quite like this one and is unsure.

Long Stockings

He wears dark long stockings with his kneepants. French boys often wore sailor suits with three-quarter stickings. Long stockings were more common in Germany.
