French Boys Knitted Garments: Chronology

Figure 1.--Here we see French boys wearing knitted garments. The boy on the left wears a machine-made knitted outfit. The boy on the left looks to be wearing a hand knitted best. The photograph is undated, but probably was taken in the 1930s.

We are not yet sure about the chronology of French knit garments. We don not see them commonly being worn in the 19th century, but our archive is very limited. Presumably manufacturing advance occurred after the turn-of-the 20th century. Apparently technological advances affected production. Here we do not yet have details. We do notice many French boys wearing knit garments in the 20th century. We see both home knitted items as well a machine knitted garments. We wonder if World War I did not encourage home knitting. Knit garments seem to have been especially popular in the inter-war era and the post-war era. French boys in the 1950s might wear knit wool cardigans and other tops and short pants. We note boys with matching tops and pants. We see quite a few younger French boys in these knit outfits during this period.
