German Photographic Studio Award Medals

Figure 1.--This CDV of German children was taken in Bremen, but the portrait is undated. The studio won an award medal in 1887. We think this means that thev portrait was taken about 1890. We suspect that if they did not win any other medal that clients might begin to wonder what happened. Thus they may have stopped mentioning an 1887 award on the bacl of the mount.

This CDV of German children was taken in Bremen, but the portrait is undated. The studio won an award medal in 1887. We notice German studios commonly mentioned these awards. I don't know much about the competitions involved. They seem to have been popular in Europe. A lot of Europan studios added their medals to the advertising on the back of CDVs and cabinent cards. This was less common, but not unknown in America. These awards if dated, and they usually were, can be useful in dating the portaits. A reader has translated the text for us, "Filiale in ..... in Joh. Terveer's Hause. Hauptstraße 18. English: Branch in .... in Joh. Terveer's House. Main Street 18. (Joh. is an abbreviation of Johann. Terveer is a Dutch name). Diplom für Portraits. Stuttgart. Photographie Atelier von Ad. Zinne. English: Diploma for Portraits. Stuttgart. Photography Studio of Ad. Zinne. (Ad is an abbreviation of Adolf or Adrian). Th. Eckelmann's Nachfolger. Th. Eckelmann's successor. Bremen. Am Wall 160. (Th. is an abbreviation of Theodor(e). Am Wall is the street address, It means At the Wall). Die Platten bleiben für Nachbestellungen aufbewahrt. English: The plates remain stored for repeat orders." We think this means that the portrait here was taken in 1887 or some time after. We would guess about 1890. A German reader agrees the portrait was taken in the 1890s, perhaps a little after 1890. We think that the portraits were probably taken within a few years of the latest award cited. This is because we suspect that if they did not win any other medal that clients might begin to wonder what happened. Thus they may have stopped mentioning an 1887 award on the back of the mount once it was several years old. After looking the card over a bit, we note that rather than an award, that the photographer here refers to a "diploma". This upon reflection is not an waward. Rather it seems to be some kind of professionl qualification. Perhaps the photographer just completed some kind of professional training.
