Little Lord Fauntleroy Suits: English Garments--Jackets

Figure 1.--This English boy in a CDV portrait is pictured with a badminton racket prop. He wears a collar-buttoning velvet Fauntleroy jacket and tie-on large lace collar. The jacket seems to have a large attached collar, but it is a litle difficult to make out. Notice the classic wide-brimmed sailoe hat at the lower left. The portrait is undated but we would guess was talen in the 1890s. The studio was A. Griffiths & So in London.

The Fauntlleroy Craze was not as popular in Europe as it was in America, but of all the European countries we see Faimtlerpys most commonly in England. There were, however, notable differences between Ametrican and English Fauntleroy suits. One of those differences were the jackets worn. Classic American Faintleroy suits had small jackets, cut away to show off the fancy blouses that the boys were wearing. There were other jackets, but it was the cut-away jacket and fancy blouse that was the classic Fauntleroy styleand we see it most commonly in the photograpnhic record. We see these cut-away jackets in Englnd as well, but we also see many boys, actually more boys wearing collar buttoning jackets and rather than a fancy Fauntleroy blouse a pin-on lace collar. The boy here is a good example of the English look (figure 1). These collar buttoning Fauntleroy suits had larger jackets, often completely covering any blouse or other top a boy might be wearing. Which we are anot at all sure just what kind of shirt-like top he is wearing. As a result the Fauntleroy blouses so common in America were not nearly as common as in England. We do see cut-away jackets, but fancy Fauntleroy blouses were much less commn. For example we note George Bampfield wearing a classic cit-away jacket, but with a very plain blouse. The jackets were done in different mterials. The classic material was velvet. Lower cost suits were done in other fabrics.
