Little Lord Fauntleroy Suits: English Styles--Double Breasted Jacket

Figure 1.--This is very different than the velvet Faunrleroy jackets worn by American boys. It is much larger than and notable lapels. In fact it rather looks lik a moder sports jaclert made in velvet. The matching kneepants, however, show that it was a period jacket. It was lined in a white material. Classic American Faintleroy suits had small jackets cut away to show off fancy blouses. We note in England, more commonly Fauntleroy suits had larger jackets, often completely covering any blouse a boy might be wearing. It is safe to say that this is the famous "Lord Fauntleroy) style suit! In fine quality black velvet it has six cut steel buttons and two smaller to each sleeve. This is very different than the velvet Faunrleroy jackets worn by American boys. It is much larger than and notable lapels. In fact it rather looks lik a moder sports jaclert made in velvet. The matching kneepants, however, show that it was a period jacket. It was lined in a white material. HBC is not positive about the date, but assume it was made in the early 20th century. The trousers have three to each knee and plainer ones at the waist to be used with braces perhaps and also to the trouser opening. These last buttons read: "Our Boys Ltd" 363 Oxford St. W". The trousers are piped around the waist with strong tape and the entire garment is lined with cotton twill. There is another label reading : "Our Boys" Clothing Company Ltd, 363. 365. 367 Oxford St W. On the actual label is written 3/11/08 No. 20435. Measurements: nape to back of jacket: 50 cm and across shoulders : 28cms. The book Little Lord Fauntleroy by Frances Burnett was published in 1886 and was an immediate success all over the world. Mothers everywhere including England wanted to dress their little boys in velvet suits, shirts with Van Dyke collars, patent leather shoes with buckles and arranged their hair in long flowing locks. There are many stories of how this look came to be so resented by boys--even though it was only for parties--but mothers were adamant.
