American Little Lord Fauntleroy Suit Headwear: Flat Caps

Figure 1.--This unidentified little boy looks to be wearing a classic Faubtleroy suit with fancy, ruffled blouse. If you look closely, however, the jacket hs sailor styling. The boy looks to be about 4 years old. The portrait was probably taken in the 1890s. Note the jaunty flat cap. The studio was Vansickle in Fremont, Michigan.

We see boys wearing flat caps with quite a variety of different suits. A few boys wore flat caps with Fauntleroy suits, mostly at the turn-of-the 20th century. These tended to be the younger boys wearing flat caps. Here we see both fashionable caps in the late-19th century before flat caps became such a standard for boys and a few examples at mid-century as the flat cap was becoming increasingly popular. We notice some boys wearing jaunty flat caps with Fauntleroy suits. The flat cap of course was to become a major style for boys in the early 20th century. It was not, however, nearly as common in the 1880s and 90s. Nor was it seen as an important style of boys headwear. The flat cap does not look quite right for the Fauntleroy to modern eyes because we see the Fauntleroy suit as vera very formal outfit and the flat cap as a casual style, but remember that may not be how 19th century mothers may have viewed it. This was not one of the more important types of headwear worn with Fauntleroy suits, but we do see a number of examples in the photographic record. What we do not know if these caps were bought specifically to wear with the boy's Fauntleroy suit or was just one of the caps the boy had.

Prevalence

We see boys wearing flat caps with quite a variety of different suits. A few boys wore flat caps with Fauntleroy suits. Flat caps were not one of the most common headwear types worn with Fauntleroy suits, but we do see examples in the photographic record.

Usage

What we do not know if these caps were bought specifically to wear with the boy's Fauntleroy suit or was just one of the caps the boy had. We suspect that in the 1880s that they may havecbeen purchased specifically to be worn with a Fauntlrroy suit, but as the flat cap becme more popular at the turn-of-the 20th century this was probably less common.

Chronology

The popularity of Fauntleroy suits and flat caps overlapped. We are not yet entirely sure about the chronology of the flat cap. Some estimates date it back centuries. We do not see American boys wearing them until the late-19th century, but they only become a major style at the tun-of-the 20th century. This was just as the Fauntleroy suit was declining in popularity. We see both fashionable caps in the late-19th century before flat caps became standard for boys. Notice the jaunty flat cap here withba loud pattern, probably in the 1890s. The flat cap was notvvery common in the 1880s and 90s. Nor was it seen as an important style of boys headwear. After the turn-of-the 20th century we no longer see such loud patterns, except perhaps with gilfers. We do see boys wearing flat caps done in patterns, but not loud patterns like this. We see a few examples of boys wearing flat caps with Fauntleroy suits in the early-20th century. It was at this time the flat cap was becoming more popular. And the flat caps we see are not the jaunty caps the boys wore earlier, but the more standard caps that were becoming popular at the time. The flat cap of course became a major style for boys in the early-20th century.

Age

The boys wearing flat caps with Fauntleroy suits tended to be the younger boys wearing flat caps, but some of the older boys wearing Fauntleroy suits. We have not yet found an example of a boy wearing a Fauntleroy dress or Fauuntleroy kilt suit with a flat cap. One might think that a few examples may exist, butvthy certainly were not very common. This varied a little chronologically. As flt caps became more common at the turn-of-the 20th century. We begin to ee more bpys wearing fkt caps with Fauntleroy suits. Even a few school age boys. The number is limited because school age boys did not commonlyvwear Fauntleroy suits and pre-school boys did not commonly wear flat caps. Here we are talking about classic Fauntleroy suits with cut-away jackers. Fauntleroy styling as, however, very popular. And some mothers added Fauntleroy blouses or pin-on claars with regular suits for chool-age boys. And these older boys would be the most likely to wear flat caps as the flat caps were so prevalent with school age boys. Here we might see boys up to their pre-teens wearing Fauntleroy outfits with flat caps.

Flat Cap Styles

We notice some boys wearing jaunty flat caps with Fauntleroy suits.

Fashion Sence

The flat cap does not look quite right for the Fauntleroy to modern eyes because we see the Fauntleroy suit as vera very formal outfit and the flat cap as a casual style, but remember that may not be how 19th century mothers may have viewed it.
