American Little Lord Fauntleroy Suit Vests: Cut-away Jackets

Fautleroy suit vests
Figure 1.--Yhis is a poor scan, nut we see that mother has bought fancy Fauntleroy blouses fr her two sons about 5-8 years old. But she has chosen suits that inexplicably up most of the fancy blouses. The younger boys wear the classic cut=way Fauntleroy jacket, but for some uinknioen reason with a vest so we only see the fancy blouse collar and bottom part of the front justing out under the vest along with the wrist cuffs. His older brither wear a cillar buttibing jacket with Norfolk styling. Here we see even less of the Fauntleroy blouse. The studio was ???rshburg Bros in Seymour, Indiana.

Vests are a garment not often associated with Fauntleroy suits and for good reason. Vests were very common in the late-19th century, only not with Fauntleroy suits -- especially not the classic cut-away jacket suits. This is because the cut-away jackets with open fronts commonly chosen for the Fauntleroy suit were especially useful for displaying a fancy Fauntleroy blouse with frills and ruffles to best advatage. A vest would only cover up the blouse rather than display it. Vests were worn with both cut-away jackets and lapel sack suit jackets. However it was rasre to see a cut-away jacket vested suit don as a Fauntkleroy outfit. The boy wears a beautifully tailored velvet vested suit suit with piping trim. And he has pin on lace collars and wrist trim. You can see here that if he was waring a Fauntleroy blouse, it would have been all covered up (figure 1). Thus while we see examples like this wen a boy is wearing a pinon clooar rather than a Fauntleroy blouse. We see veryfew when the boy is weaing a fancy Fauntleroy blouse. It di not maske sence, but a few mothers did not het the message.
