Scraps: Chronology

Figure 1.-- We are not sure when scraps were last created, but all the cloyhing seems to be earlier than the 1920s. Here we see some turn-of-the-20th century scraps reproduced in West Germany, probably in the 1960s. Notice the script is in English. That means that there was an export market for these scripts.

Scraps Chronology

We are not entirely sure about the chronology of scrapbooks. The chronology of the scrap pictures is easier to follow because it largely reflected the chronology of color lithography. As far as I know, these scraps did not become popular until they could be produced in full color. There may be black and white scraps, but we are not familiar with them. Color lithography permitted the printing of color images in great number and at low cost. This process was used in many ways such as the scraps here or trading cards, greeting cards, commercial packaging, and other uses. I am not sure when the first scraps appeared. One source reports that the manufacturer Hagelberg-Berlin printed the first scrap-pictures in 1860. They were done in embossed and stampred out sheets. We haf thought that scraps began to appear in the 1880s. Apparently it was much earlier. We think they were done throughout the early 20th century, both in the 1900s and 1910s. We are less sure about the 1920s. Now we know that scraps were reproduced into the 1950s and perhaos even the 1960s, but these are reproductions of earlier scraps.

Trade Mark and Country Designation

A HBC reader notes, "Made in Germany" or "Printed in Germany" is an old commercial "trade mark". In the 19th century when industrialisation started the British Government demanded that all goods produced in Germany had to bear such a label. It is a curious result that in the 20th century the label "Made in Germany" became a quality sign for German products internationally well accepted. The label "... in W-Germany" is a consequence of the separation of Germany after World War II during the cold war now no more in use."
