*** Ayer boys Mark and George 1891

Figure 1.-Here we have another of two cabinet cards showing the Ayers boys, both taken at the same time. And unlike many old portraits, we know a great deal about them. The boys were photographed abouy 1891. Both boys were raised on a farm and became farmers as adults. The boys are dressed similarly in what look like collar buttoning suit jackets, Eton collars, and during the Fauntleroy era modest-sized plaid floppy bows. The only differentiation is that Marks curls have not yet been cut.

George and Mark Ayer (United States, 1891)

Here we have a two cabinet cards of the Ayers boys, both taken at the same time. And unlike many old portraits, we know a great deal about them. We see American farm brothers George and Mark Ayer. They are from Newbury, New Hampshire, a small town north of Manchester that probably did not have a photographic studio. They are the grandchildren of Betsey (Blood) Peasley. The boys were probably photographed in 1891. They would have been about 3-6 years old. One portrait shows both boys standing, posing stands behind them. The second portrait shows Mark seated, his older brother George standing next to him. George H. Ayer was born: November 26, 1886. He died May 7, 1962. Mark Peaslee Ayer was born April 6, 1888 and died in 1952. Both boys were raised on a farm and became farmers as adults. The boys are dressed similarly in what look like collar buttoning suit jackets, Eton collars and during The Fauntleroy era modest-sized plaid floppy bows. The only differentiation is that Marks curls have not yet been cut. The two together help set out the age parameters for ringlets. They probably would have been cut when he was 4 or 5 years old. There appear to have been loose ringlets at the back and a better formed top curl. Mark looks like he does not have a lot of hair, but it is all combed so as to from his back and top curls. George has what would be seen today as a rather modern hair style. The studio was S.D. Quint in Manchester, New Hampshire.
