Dutch Boys' Hair Styles: Chronology

Figure 1.--These boys show the short hair cuts that were common in the 1940s. Only very young boys had longer hair.

HBC does not yet have sufficient information to begin developing a time line of Dutch hair styles. We have, however, begun to collect information to build a timeline.

Late 19th Century

Early 20th Century (1900-20)

In the early 20th century the Diutch boy bangs style was more common. This style was popular for a long time for young boys (first quarter of the 20th century).

Inter-War and War Years (1920-45)

Younger boys may have worn curls over their ears, but boys no longer wore shoulder length hair. Most boys wore very short hair. Some boys had shaved heads on the 1920s as was worn in Germany. This was less common on the 1930s, but boys commonly wore their hair cut very short at the sides,

Post War Era (1945-70)

Dutch boys after World War II wore short hair styles. Boys no longer had cropped hair, but most wore their hair cut well away from their ears. Short-back-anssides as seen here were worn (figure 1). Cuts with slightly more hair (and only slightly more) were perhaps more common.

Late 20th Century (1970-2000)

Older boys revived long hair in the late 1960s and early 1970s--probably mimicking the Beatles as in America and other European countries. They were soon copied by younger boys. Long hair, sometimes, down to shoulders was popultr during the 1970s and early 80s. By the mid 80s, shorter styles became increasingly popular, By the late 90s many boys were wearing very short cropped hair cuts.

Early 21st Century (2000- )

A Dutch reader writes, "Most Dutch boys in 2005 wear short hair cut styles. But unlike earlier eras when short hair was common, there is less social pressure to conform. There are some boys who prefer to make their own choices in the way they dress and wear their hair. Being a teacher I also notice that less short styles (over the ears, touching the shoulders etc.) are now becomming more popular, of course especially in more progressive and alternative families."
