Preppy Fashions (U.S., 2000s)

Figure 1.--Here we see some preppy colored short pants being worn in the mid-2000s. Note the striped searsucker shorts--a preppy standard. Madras shorts were also an important preppy standard.

A HBC reader has provided an assessment of preppt culture in the 2000s: I thought you might like some information about today's preppy culture in America. Preppy culture and fashion its still very much alive and expanding.

Location

Preppy culture is strongest (if not exclusively located) in the suburbs. I live in an especially preppy area in New Jersey, myself being at least slightly preppy.

Sterotyping

It is notable that several characteristics often attributed to preps aren't always true, and there are also often oversights. Being preppy doesn't make you snobby nor classy.

Prep Culture

Prep culture is more or less just what a social group "decided" (though not conciously) to be. It tends to be a more athletic (In this area, it is Lacrosse for whatever reason) and popular group in nature. Whether alcohol just comes with popularity in other schools, or this is just an area happening, I don't know, but drinking is prevelant and seems to come with preppyness. This could be due to having a bit more money than others or the fact that it is just easy to get it around here.

Clothes

Clothes of a preppy male usually include polo shirts, button down shirts, khakis (often colored), seersucker, and less often, cargo pants. Both patchwork and regular style madras are now also very popular. Jeans usually are not worn. Shoes are often just sneakers, but Sperry Topsiders and other leather shoes are popular. Socks are white or black (the black socks tend to be Nike or made by other athletic companies) and are either lowcut or crew socks (not usually in between). Hair varies, but rarely is it buzzed/extremely short or extremely long. Dressier clothes are a blazer, tie, and khakis. Suits are rare. Girls wear much of the same clothing in girl style. Capris usually replace khakis and jeans are worn much more often.

Companies

A common misconception about preppy clothes is that much of it comes from Abrecrombie—-in fact, this is usually avoided (It tends to be considered more of a "poser" preppy store). Usual stores are Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Tommy Hilfiger, and Lacoste among others.

Colors

It is notable that the stereotypical "pink and green" is often replaced with a more subtle subtle yellow and blue.
