In addution to the major holiday clebrations, schools also have special celebrations of their owns. Some of the most important are Sports Day, Open Day, the Summer Fete, and Prize Giving. Some schools have a Summer Fair. Some have destictive names and the scheduling varies from school to school. There may also be differences as to how they are celebrated. Virtually all schools have these major events. Many schools have their own destinctive events and traditions. Many schools have a special day or event for new students. There are a variety of other annual events such as the school play and concert. Many of these events are early looked forward to by the children, especially at boarding schools, in part because it means that their parents will share the day with them.
I am not entirely sure about open days. I think they are similar to Sports Day because there are athletic competitions involved. Unlike Sports Day, the sporting events are not the main focus of the day. It is an opportunity for the children to show their parents around the school and see some of the children's work. Itvis also an opportunity for prospective parents to learn a little about the school.
Sports Day is an annual event normally held in June near the end of the school year. This is normally done as althetic (track and field) organized as house competitions. The children are always keen to attempt to break school records. It is a festive occassion for the children as the parents are invited to cheer the children on and they spend the day together. Other events and exhibitions are often staged to show case school achievements.
Most schools in the summer hold some kind of school fete or fayre, both to have fun and raise a little money for the school. The children and teachers organize various booths or activities. There are commonly concerts or a range of drama or dance presentations. They are held by both day and boarding schools. They are probably most popular at the boarding schools as the parents and children can enjoy the day together.
The annual celebration at the end of the school year is commonly called speech day as a guest speaker is invited to provide advise to the school leavers. The children are probasbly more interested in the prizegiving ceremony following the speech. Here they receie awards for acdemics, sports, music, and other school activities. Many of the awards are presented as cups. There are also a range of house cups. Some of the awards are fairly stanndard, but there ae also many awards unique to each individual school.
