S.W Peck & Co.

The advertiser, Samuel Peck & Co., is a famous outlet for boys' clothes in New York City. Yje company was located at Samuel W. Peck & Co., 806-808 Broadway, New York City. They billed themselves as, "The largest makers of Boys' Fine Clothing in the world."

The Youths' Companion

The ad appeared in The Youth's Companion, October 1, 1903, p. 463). The publication described itself as "An Illustrated Weekly Paper For Young People and the Family." It was established in 1827. The magazine was published in Boston, Massachusetts, by the Perry Mason Company, 201 Columbus Avenue. It appeared under this title until 1929. It was in the late 19th century one of the most popular weekly periodicals in America and known for the quality of the writing. The magazine catered to teen-age boys and girls especially, containing articles on sports, on hobbies, and on various literary and cultural interests. But it was really a family magazine and had many advertisements for clothing, both adult and children's. The magagazine had a very strict policy about the advertising carried because its readers were mostly children.

Here we have an ad for a knickers Noefolk suit. The boy depicted in the suit, probably about 14 or 15 years old, wears a very dressy above-the-knee knicker suit with long black stockings, hightop shoes, and what looks like a stiff collar with necktie. He is obviously very dressed up. The boy is wearing the Sampneck "Norfolk" suit, made in sizes for boys from age 8 to age 16. The Peck ad copy reads, "The Finest Clothes for Juveniles, Boys and Young Men Bear this trademark: "Sampneck". Registered, 1900. Look for it in the inner breast pocket of every coat. It is the makers' guarantee of Best Style, Best Fit, and Best Service. "Sampeck" clothing is sold by all department stores and leading clothiers in the United States.
