Farnham Grammar School Uniform Chronology: The 1920s

Figure 1.--Here we see some of the Farnham Grammar School boys in 1927. There was no school uniform, but we note quite a few interesting trends. All of the boys wear suits. I think some of the boys have the school shield on their clothes, but it is difficult to tell. Most, but not all boys, wear the horizontaslly stripped school tie. Notice one boy wearing a school blazer. He had presumabbly transferred from another school.

There does not seem to have been any uniform in 1920 other than a suit and tie. The ties are the horizontal ties in contrast go the vertical stripes introduced later. Many boys wear dark-solid colored ties. I'm not sure what this difference represented. Perhaps this dark tie was an earlier style. Other than the tie there does not seem to be any required uniform item. An exceotion here was probablt a school cap, although the boys are not wearing their caps for the portrait. Almost all grammar schools at the gime had caps. A few boys were still wearing Eton coollars. The boys by 1927 are dressed more uniformily, some with crests on their suit jackets. Difficult to tell if it the boys are actually wearing a uniform. Eton collars had disappeared.

I think some of the boys have the school shield on their clothes, but it is difficult to tell. Most, but not all boys, wear the horizontaslly stripped school tie. Even the school tie, however, does not seem to be required. At least many boys are not wearing it. Notice one boy wearing a school blazer with piping. He had presumabbly transferred from another school. Notice some of the boys are wearing kneesocks with colored bands. FGS did not require kneesocks with a colored band, but some boys had them showing that this fashion existed in the 1920s. Also notice some boys have kneesocks with patterened tops. All of the boys wear kneesocks with their short pantsd suits. Many of the boys came from rural villages around Farnham. A few boys are wearing wellies.
