Farnham Grammar School Uniform Chronology: The 1960s

Figure 1.-- The boys in the 1960s were all wearing the dark blazers with the school shield. The school seems to have strictly enforced the dress code. We note some boys wearing their Scout uniforms in 1961. Most of the younger boys in the early 60s seem to be wearing short trousers and kneesocks. It seems to have been a school rule for the First Formers. One boy looks to be wearing sandals.

They most mostly wear kneesocks rather than the more expensive turn-over-top socks. By the mid-1960s virtually all the boys were wearing long pants. Presumably the school had dropped the school rule requiring the junior boys to wear shorts and made it optional. We only see one of the younger boys in 1965 wearing short pants.

1960

The school in 1960 had a Christmas card made up. It is a scene shot in the school chapel, presumably with choristers from the school choir as they are singing. The boys are dressed in their school uniforms. It looks like perhaps the first two forms are wearing short trousers. I'm not sure how common this was at British school. Nor am I sure what the purpose was. Did the school them to friends of the school? Or did the boys send them. A former student writes, "Shorts were already optional in my time so I can't say when they were made optional. I recall one rather tall boy who wore short trousers in 1960. I vividly recall this lad wearing shorts well into his third year, when hardly nobody else was wearing them, ostensibly because he would be transferring to a Spartan boarding school in the wilds of Yorkshire where shorts were worn by everyone, Gordonstoun-style. He was quite tall for his age and stood out like a sore thumb."

1963

The boys in 1963 all wear the dark blazer and the school tie (figure 1). The long trousers are much more narrow than the ones we noted in the early 1950s. The Forst Formers all look to be wearing short trousers and kneesocks. We assume that there was a school rule. Some young looking boys wear long trousers, we assume that they are Second Form boysd, but we have no detail on the school rule. One boy looks to be wearing school sandals, but it is difficult to be sure..

1965

By the mid-1960s virtually all the boys were wearing long pants. Presumably the school had dropped the school rule requiring the junior boys to wear shorts and made it optional. We only see one of the younger boys in 1965 wearing short pants. A HBC reader recalls an experience with short trousers at the school.
