We have found some Australian school garments that we can not identify or are difficult to explain. We will archive these images here. Hopefully Australian readers will be able to provide some insights for us.
We are unsure anout this photograph which was apparently taken in Tasmania, perhaps in the 1940s. They childten look to be a school sports team of some kind. As the adults are dressed up, it seems more like a team photo rather than a group involved in physical education. It is a bit difficult to tell just what the children are wearing. It looks to be some kind of gym slip of some kind which would be very unusual for boys. Hopefylly our Australian readrs can provide some insights about this photograph. An Australian reader tells us, "To me it looks like the students are wearing a form of vest that fits over the head. Some of the children have the vest tucked into their shorts. They usually tie at the waist. They are worn to define which
house they belong too in school sports competitins. This is done by wearing a vest of the colour house you are in. In Australia many of the netball teams in the amateur league wear a
similar vest due to not having a proper uniform. The fact that there are only 12 students in the team could be due to various reasons: 1) It is a small school and each house only has a few members. 2) It is a mixed team of both boys and girls with only 12 members in the side."
