Australian School Uniform: Regional Trends--New South Wales

Figure 1.--Here we see a boy from Sydney in 1992 with his chosen method of transport to school--a skate board. He is also an avid surfer. He has his socks pulled up here, but likes to wear them down.

Canberra is the capital of Australia. It is a special federal district located within New South Wales. One observer reports that almost all Canberra schools have uniforms. Sydney, Australia's best known city, is also located in New South Wales. An Australian reader reports that, "The photograph on the main page of the regional section looks like it is from Sydney. I have traveled on those trains before. The other clue that gives it away is the khaki uniforms. Adelaide only has one school that wears khaki uniforms and their students all travel by bus." One reader says that tartan dresses are popular as school uniforms for the girls in Sydney. On this page we see a boy from Sydney with his chosen method of transport to school--a skate board. He is also an avid surfer. He describes his school uniform, "I go to a primary school and I'm in the sixth grade. Next year I go to the first form at Barrenjoey High School. Our school uniform is grey shorts, shirt, and long socks. We like to wear our shirts out, our socks down and our jumpers around our waist. We hate tucking in our shirts because we look like pansies, but the Headmaster makes us."
