Figure 1.--This English boy was playing in the backyard (backgarden) of his home. The image is undated, but we would guess about 1905. He looks to be about 6 years old. He has been breached and wears a sweater, white kneepants, and dark long stockings. His mother was not about to cut his curls yet. His curls were done with a very sharp center part. Notice how his mother has formed small curls on both side of the center part. Image courtesy of the MD collection.

English Boy: About 1905

This portrait is unidentified. We do not know who this boy is, other than we are sure that he is definitely English. He looks to be about 6 years old. We know nothing about the family, but tricycles were still rather expensive before World War I. Most children did not have one. Thus we think that this boy came from a family that lived in comfortable circumstances. This English boy was playing in the backyard (backgarden) of his home. It looks to be in a large city. The boy has been breached and wears a sweater, white kneepants, and dark long stockings. This boy must have been an exceptionally well behaved boy to sit through all the curling that must have been encolved.

The wheels are quite narrow. Thisis one indication that it was proabaly not yet the 1910s. The image is undated, but we would guess about 1905. This is a very rough guess. We are positive taht it is a pre-World War I (1014-18) image, but are less sure precisely when the portarit was taken before the War.

Chronology

The image is undated, but we would guess about 1905. This is a very rough guess. We are positive taht it is a pre-World War I (1014-18) image, but are less sure precisely when the portarit was taken before the War. I don't think it would have beem taken much before 1905, but 1905-10 seens a reasonable approximate range.

Clothing

The boy has been breached and wears a sweater, white kneepants, and dark long stockings. This boy must have been an exceptionally well behaved boy to sit through all the curling that must have been encolved. Also his white outfit, especially the haute kneepants must have beeb rather easy tio get soiled. His rather plain, practical sweater seems to be contarst with his very unparctical, involved hair style. Notice the three buttons on the shoulder. This made it easier for mother to help dress him. Heweas dark strap s shoes.

Hair Style

His mother was not about to cut his curls yet. His curls were done with a very sharp center part. Notice how his mother has formed small curls on both side of the center part.
