Little Lord Fauntleroy Suit: Chicago Boy (1880s)

Figure 1.--This American boy was photographed in Chicago, Illinois. The portrait is undated, but we would guess the late 1880s. He wears one of the largest lace collars we have noted. You can hardly see his jacket. The boy here looks to us to have pinned on wrist cuffs, but we are not sure if the collar is attached to the blouse or not. Note the wide-brimmed hat he is holding. Individual

This boy is unidentified. We would guess tht he is about 5 years old.

Family

Based on this bnoy's outfit, we believe that he came from a very affluent family. Both the gair style and the lace collar in particular point to a wealthy family. The time needed for the hair almost certainly meand his mother had help in the home. The lace collar even more than the velvet suit wouls have been quite popular.

Location

This American boy was photograohed in Chicago, Illinois. Unfortunately that is virtually the only definitive information we have about the portrait. Chicago by the 1880s had emerged as the great metroplis of the mid-West bread basket. Agricultural products both meat and grain poured into Chicago by rail and then for distribution to northeastern markets. In the process great fortunes were made. This boy probably came from one of those families.

Chronology

The portrait is undated, but we would guess the late 1880s. There is no way to be sure about this. The style of the suit, the lace collar, the hat, and the style of the photogtraph suggests the lte 1880s to us. Of course there is no way to be sure, the early 1890s is also quite possible.

Hair Style

The boy here also has a very elaborate hair style. He has a top curl along with ringlets. Maintaining a hair stuyle like that would have required considerable effort.
