Illustrators: Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone: National Drawings

Figure 1.--This buckaroo is clearly an American boy with his cowboy hat, jeans, and guns. The hat, however, looks just a touch Australian. Notice the sandals. Very few American boys would have worn their cowboy outfits with "T"-strap sandals.

The sisters often focused on England, in part because many of the books that they illustrated were set in England. They also, however, illustrated children from many other countries. This was especially possible when they worked on some of their many books woth out a specific story or country setting. They often drew children in easily recogniazable national outfits. American boys might wear jeans or a cowboy suit. English boys might wear a schoolboy uniform. A French boy would wear a smock. A Scottish boy would of course wear a kilt. I'm sure there are many other such national drawings, but those are the ones we have noted in the limited number of drawings available to us. The nationalities are not always identified. Sometimes there are small deatails giving a little English touch to the drawings.

America

American boys might wear long pants jeans or a cowboy suit seen here. We note that some English garments someties creep into the American drawings.

England

English boys might wear a schoolboy uniform. The sailor suit was another favorite for English boys.

France

A French boy would wear a school smock. Many other children in traditional smocks with front smocking are English children, but school smocks are generally reserved for French boys. Another favorite for French boys were sailor suits, usually identifiable as French because of the red pom on the cap.

Germany

German boys would be drawn in lederhosen.

Italy

I'm not sure about Italian boys. I don;t believe that I have noted a drawing by the sisters of Italian boys.

Scotland

A Scottish boy would of course wear a kilt.

Other Countries

I'm sure there are many other such national drawings, but those are the ones we have noted in the limited number of drawings available to us.
