A French boy would often wear a school smock in the Grahame Johnstone drawings. Complete with a beret there is not doubt about it. There attention to detail is fascinating. Notice the little sguggle on the beret. I'm not sure why they drew a partailly front opening snmock--I have not noted this as a common French style, but I guess it was need for the positioning of the hands. Many other children in traditional smocks with front smocking are English children, but school smocks are generally reserved for French boys. Another favorite for French boys were sailor suits, usually identifiable as French because of the red pom on the cap. We also note they often used boot-like shoes in the drawings of French boys.
