French Boys Clothes: Serge--School Clothes/Vêtements de garçon français, habits d'école

Figure 1.--At school we wore grey smocks over our regular clothes (figure 1). The school portrait here shows my brother in our school smock about 1956. I wore one just like it. We only wore the smocks to school, not at any other times.

At school we wore grey smocks over our regular clothes The school portrait here shows my brother in a school smock about 1956 (figure 1). I wore one just like it. There were many different colors and styles of smoicks available. Mother often chose light-grey ones for us. It did not make much difference to me. We began wearing smocks when we started school at about ahe 5. We only wore the smocks to school, not at any other times. It was a knee-length smock with white trim. The buttons were at the side and it had a belt which could be adjusted. All of the boys wore smocks as our school required it. We wore our regular clothes under the smock. The idea was to keep our clothes from getting dirty. Our teacher also had a grey smock. We stoped wearing smocks when we were about 11-12 years old. A school photograph taken in 1962 show us wearing sweaters. My brother has a zip up sweater. I have a "V"-neck sweater.
