** Japanese boys clothes -- northern Japanese family 1970s

Northern Japanese Family (1970s?)

Figure 1.--This is a scene of a young mother with three very young children and the family dog. It is undated, but as it is a color image we think it was probably taken noo earlier than the 1970s, although the late-60s is possible. . We might have guessed the 80s, but one of the boys seems to be wearing long stockings rather than tights. As tights were probably replacing long stockings in the 60s, we think that the 80s is unlikely. Perhps readers will have some idea The boys look to be about 2-7 years old. The younger boy wears shortals. The other two boys wear sweaters, short pants and tights or long stocking. The middle pre-school boy wears rather oversized shorts. The older boy wear trim-fitting shorter cut shorts. At first we thought he as wearing tights, but on closer examonatiin the may be long stockings. We think the family lived in northern Japan because the photograph came with a group of images from the north.

We think the family lived in northern Japan because the photograph came with a group of images from the north. A reader writes, " I have looked at this photo quite carefully, and I do not think that long stockings are involved. First of all, dark gray was an unusual color for children's long stockings, at least in Europe, Canada and America during the 1950s and 1960s (or earlier in America). Also there is no indication of supporters being worn by the boy with the yellow shirt. I'm wondering whether you took a bit of the dog's ear for a bit of leg on the boy's upper thigh. Since the color is similar, I can understand this assumption. But I think the boy is wearing gray cotton tights with very brief dark shorts (which became vey popular in Japan and were worn with tights during the winter). As for the boy with knee socks, I think these are worn over black tights. We do sometimes see ankle socks being worn on top of long stockings, but I have never seen knee socks worn with black long stockings. I think this photo must come from the late 1970s or 1980s." Our reader may well be correct. Certainly the timing suggests that the boy in the yellow shirt would be wearring tights. However it is a a real coincidence that the dog's ear would be at precisely the point on the boy's leg where there would be a break between the stockings and shorts. And noyice that the ear/strip of exposed leg begins at precisely the point that the break between the shorts and stockings woukd appear. And it is a straigt line across the leg. This is just how the break between the stockings and shorts woukd be and not how the dog's ears would fall. We know a good bit about the chronology of long stockings/tughts in Europe, but less in Japan. And the situation is somewhat complicated by the fact that this is an image from northern Japan which may havec been more traditional than further south. And we also have the problem that we are not sute just when this photograph was taken.
