United States Juvenile Suits/Outfits: Unknown Juvenile Styles

unknown juvenile boys suit
Figure 1.--This cabinet card shows an Iowa family. It is not dated, but looks like the late-1890s to us. We are not sure gow to describe the younger boy's suit. The closest we can come to is a sailor suit, but it is different enough that we are really not sure. Sailor suits do not normally have collars extending over the shouders. His olserbrothers wear double-breasted suits,l like their father. Teboy in front wears knee pants and long stickings. we are notsure abiut the older boy, but in the lte-1890s quite olds boys were wearing knee pants. Their sister wears a plaid dress. The studio was W.L. Monlux in Cirwith, Iowa. There was a note on the back, " Wolfkill family Neighnors to mother when she lived Golfieldd." There is a Goldfield, Iowa.

We have found some suits that we are not sur how to identify. There were a wide range of suits, espcially for younger boys. Styles for older boys as for men ewere more stbdardized. For younger boys this as sufferent becuse moyhers were often let their fashion style run morehn was possible or older boys. We will pot then here. Perhps readers will have some thoughts. A reader corectly points out that fundamentlly it is a cut-away jacket, but a very unusual one as the lapel/collar is huge. This is one of a variety of fancy suits popuar in the late-19th century.
