British School Garments: Footwear--Slipons

Figure 1.--Schools varied as to regulations concerning footwear. The boys at this prep school could wear either lace-up shoes or slip-ons. Sandals were also permitted.

We notice some English boys wearing slip-on shoes or loafers. This tended to be thge case at some specufic schoolds. Thery were didciyraged at most schools. Many of the ones we noted were black. We did not notice the penny loafer style that was common in America. Slipons when allowed, appear to have been a popular choice for boys. They were easy to where and avoided the bother of constantly tieing shoe laces, althoy=ugh this was a task generalkly mnastered by boys by age 6-7 years. We find that convenience is an important factor for boys when judging clothing. Not all schools permitted loafers, but some dids. These seemns to have been a matter of achieving somevdegree of unifiormity without indsiudtingh on a specific uniformn shoe. Here we are taklking about schools with uniforms.
