** Unidentified English School Group

Unidentified English School Group (about 1960)

Figure 1.-- Here we see a small group which we believe to be English school boys. Given their age (about 8 years old) We think that they are probably the new boys at a prep school. An Anglican school is possible because it looks like achurch activity room. Of course many prep chools had Anglican connections. We have no idea why the boys are wearing berets, perhaps it was part of a French lesson. We supose they could be visitors from France, bnt the boys look more British than French to us and after World War II, for some reason, the beret rapidly went out of style in France. The portrait looks to have been taken in the very early 1960s, perhaps the late-50s.

A British raeder also provides us some clues. "I also don't quite know what to make of this. I agree with you it was photographed in a church hall. The group shows different age children. I think it looks like an activity in which the boys wearing berries have finished a drama or singing activity. I am not sure that all the boys are from the same school. It looks more like a snapshot than a posed picture taken by a professional. I think it is a photograph taken in the 1960's. The man and woman could be school staff or the organisers of the possible festival. A very interesting picture. The boy wearing glasses looks like they are wire made spectacles made available on the national Health. It is as you think a possible Anglican church school. Could be a French class might be a connection with France. A school assembly perhaps."

We seem to be in agreement. The only thing we disagree on is the school. We think that if the boys were not from the same school, there would be far more difference in their clothes which looks to us like a school uniform. The major difference is that some boys weer sweatters which is understandable. At prep schools. the boys wear uniforms. It was, however, up to the boys as to t wether or not to wear a sweater. Note that the sweaters like the shirt and shorts (with one exception) are basically the same. Especially notice that they are all wearing the same tie. The boys wearuing the uniform look to be the same age, excprt for two younger boy in front--proably the children of the adults.
