English School Uniform: Individual Schools--Hayes Grammar School

Figure 1.--This 1958 photograph shows Form 1B at HGS. The boys wear blazers with short trousers while the girls wear sweaters and gym slips.

The Hayes Grammar School appears to have been one of the few such schools that was coeducational. This was unsusual as most grammar schools were single gender schools. The full name was the Hayes County Grammar School. The school still exists, but became a comprehensive in 1974/5, with the new name Hayes Manor School. When it was a grammar school, the boys wore blazers with colored piping. The girls wore sweaters. The available image from 1958 shows the boys wearing flannel shorts and knee socks.

School Details

The Hayes Grammar School appears to have been one of the few such schools that was coeducational. This was unsusual as most grammar schools were single gender schools. The full name was the Hayes County Grammar School. The school still exists, but became a comprehensive in 1974/5, with the new name Hayes Manor School. It's the school where the current Director-General of the BBC, Greg Dyke, was a pupil. Grammar Schools were academically selective secondary schools. Many grammar schools were single gender schools, but coed grammar schools were not unknown. An English reader confirms that is most unusual, at that date, that it is a mixed school."

Location

Hayes is a working-class area of west London (in the county of Middlesex.)

Chronology

HBC has only a few images from the school, but they show how English schoolwear trends were changing in the 1960s. These changes were observable ay grammar schools even before they became comprehensives.

1958

An examination of the photograph provides some details about the uniform regulations at the school. The students wear boys wear blazers with colored piping. The girls wear sweaters. The available image from 1958 shows the boys wearing short trousers and kneesocks. The fact that all the students are wearing the full uniform suggests that the regulations were strictly enforced.

1960

The Hayes Grammar School appears to have been one of the few such schools that was coeducational. This was unsusual as most grammar schools were single gender schools. The full name was the Hayes County Grammar School. The school still exists, but became a comprehensive in 1974/5, with the new name Hayes Manor School. When it was a grammar school, the boys wore blazers with colored piping. The girls wore sweaters. The available image from 1960 shows the uniform little changed from the 1950s. One difference was that some of the Form 1 boys had begun to wear long pants.

1963

A British reader tells us, "I was a pupil at HCGS from 1963 to 1970. In 1963 boys in the first year could wear either short or long trousers: but long trousers were obligatory from the second year." [Hunt]

1966

Again the boys uniform is unchanged, except rather than grey shorts, the boys appear to be wearing black long trousers. The girls uniform seems unchanged, except for one girl whonwears white kneesocks. Some boys are wearing longer hair cuts.

Figure 2.--This photograph shows that students at Hayes are no longer wearing uniforms, although a few boys are still wearing blazers. Several boys have begun wearing their hair long.

1974

The uniform at the school had changed tremendously by 1974. In fact it had almost dissapeared. A few boys still wear their blazers, but not with ties. The girls no longer wear cardigans and jumpers. White kneesocks are common. One girl even wears trendy looking trousers. An old boy writes, "In regards to photos you have of Hayes County Grammar School, I left the school in 1974 the supposed date of your picture. we fought long and hard to oppose uniform wearing for those in 6th form, ie over 16, even threatening a strike (of sorts) but the remainder of the school where required to wear full uniform. The blazer had a light blue braiding around it in my time and i believe it was always so." [Carson]
