Merbein State School (Australia, 1918)

Figure 1.-- We have found some cabinet cards of the students posed in front of the school building at the Merbein State School about 1918. This was the date provided by the dealer. Many of the boys are wearing suits. We are not sure if this was their normal dress, or if the children were dressed up for the portrait. We wre a little surprised that in a rural area, more boys were not barefoot. The Fauntloy items with the younger boy, makes us supect it may have been taken a little earlier. Put your cursor on the imgae to se the younger children.

Many of the boys are wearing suits. We are not sure if this was their normal dress, or if the children were dressed up for the portrait. We wre a little surprised that in a rural area, more boys were not barefoot. Going barefoot was very common in Australia and New Zealnd at the time, including going to school. The Fauntloy items with the younger boy, makes us supect it may have been taken a little earlier. It was a primary school and is probably a good representive of Australian state schools in the 1910s. The younger and older students are posed separately with their teachers in front of the newly constructed school building. There look to be about 150 children. Looking through the windows inside the school building, the school does not seem to be separated into the 8 grade (form) classrooms. Unfortunately we cannot read what the board a student is holding. Merbein on the Murray River is set in an agricultutal area. It is the most northern Victoria town and was made possible by an irrigation project (1909). Here the Victoria reference os to the Australian sate, nout the gistorical period. The photographs we have come after about a decade. It was originally known as White Cliffs for its river cliffs. Until the irrigation project, the area was pastoral land and some feain farming. It became a vineyard and orchard area.
