Gloves and Mittens

Gloves and mittend are generally seen as cold weather wear. Mittens are knitted garments without seoerated fingers, except for the thumb. mostly worn by young children. Goves are hand coberings worn by both children and adults. Gloves were not just cold weather garments. They were considered necessary accessories for formal dress, especially in cooler weather.

Gloves are hand coverings worn by both children and adults. They were generally kniied with wool. Gloves were not just cold weather garments. They were considered necessary accessories for formal dress, especially in cooler weather.

Cold weather

Glovers were primarily worn in cold weather. Leather was a popular material, but they were expensive. Thus gloves were made in many other materials.

Formal wear

Formal dress was much more common in the late 19th and early 20th century than is the case today. Formal dress, except in hot weather, included dress. Both children and adults wore them. Leather gloves were common in the late 19th century. Boys commonly wore white fabric gloves for formal events in the early 19th century. Fabric gloves in other colors were also worn.
