American Little Lord Fauntleroy Suits: Colors--Dark Colors

Figure 1.--This painted over photograph shows a black Fauntleroy suit. As far as we can tell, most Fauntleroy suits were black, although there were some colored suits. Many mothers liked to add a flash of color such as colored bow. Mother here has chosen an all black and white outfit. The boy wears a white bow, a little hard to tell with his fancy white Fauntleroy suit. Also notice the white hair bow with his ringlet curls. The portrait is undated, but the white whicker furniture suggests the early-1900s.

Most of the Fauntleroy suits worn by American boys were dark suits. And as aresult, most look to be black in the black and white portraits of the day. There are other sources of information. We know that many mothers bought patterns and thus could select the material to be used. This was often, but not always black velvet. There are also colorized portraits as well as painted over portraits in addition to actual paintings. None of these are as relaible as a color photograpph in terns of depicting precise shades. They they do show, however, that other colors were used. And we have some actual vintage suits which clearly show some of the colors. We think the dark colors included: dark blue, burgundy, and forrest green suits were worn. On the previous page we see a dark blue suit. All of these colors would have shown up as black. As best as we can tell, most of the dark suits were black. We do not have any data on this and suspect that it is impossible at this time to produce any, but we think a large portion of the suits were black, but it is clear that not all were and that the colored suits were not rare or unusual.
