American Little Lord Fauntleroy Suits: Colors--Light Colors

Figure 1.-- This boy in this cabinent card is unidentified. He looks about 6 years old. He wears a light-colored velvet Fauntleroy suit with a large Fauntleroy collar and floppy bow. We are not sure about the color of the suit. Notice what looks like a mottled color. A reader tells us, "The mottle look may be from velvet. It can look that way especially if it is not brand new." The photographer is Webster in Oakland, California. The portrait is undated, but looks like the 1890s.

In addition to the dark Fauntlelroy suits we have noted light-colored suits, both velvet suits and suits done in other material. They were not as common as the dark suits, but they were not rare. We think that they were primarily lighter-weight suits for summer wear. This included both lighter-weight velvet suits as well as light-weight material for summer wear. We think light-weight/light-colored suits were less common because many boys during the summe wore just their fancy Fauntleroy blouses without a jacket during the summer. Unfortunately, we do not have a good idea about the colors of these light-colored suits. The black-and weight photography of the day makes it impossible to identify actual colors. The most likely colors would be blue, brown, cream, green, and grey, but we we can not yet confirm the extent to which these colors were used. We have noted grey velvet Fauntleroy suits. A Sargeant painting depicted one. We are less sure about other colors that were used in these light-colored suits.

Prevalence

In addition to the dark Fauntlelroy suits we have noted light-colored suits, both velvet suits and suits done in other material. This is hard to assess, but they are certainly less common in the photographic record. They were not as common as the dark suits, but they were not rare.

Seasonality

We think that light-colored Fauntleroy suits were primarily lighter-weight suits for summer wear. There was of course no air-conditioning in the 19th-century. Thus fabric weight was important, especually because dress was more formal at the time and people commonly dressed formally even during the summer. This included both lighter-weight velvet suits as well as light-weight material for summer wear. We think light-weight/light-colored suits were less common because many boys during the summe wore just their fancy Fauntleroy blouses without a jacket during the summer. We do not seem to notice cheap knockoffs of light-colored Fauntleroy suits. This was fairly common for the darker suits. Budget conscious mothers would just have the boys wear their blouses and not bother with an expensive jacket during the summer.

Specific Colors

Unfortunately, we do not have a good idea about the colors of these light-colored suits. The black-and weight photography of the day makes it impossible to identify actual colors. The most likely colors would be blue, brown, cream, green, and grey, but we we can not yet confirm the extent to which these colors were used. We have noted grey velvet Fauntleroy suits. A Sargeant painting depicted one. We are less sure about other colors that were used in these light-colored suits.

Trim and Decoration

Many dark suits were heavily embroidered. As the embroidery was commonly done in dark threas, it is often difficult to see, The trim and decoration shows up much better on the light-colored suits. We note various kinds of decorative work. We note edge work in contrasting colors as well as buttons in contrasting colors. We also note embroidered work. While the decorative work was commonly a contrasting color, we do not know just what shades were used. It could be a lighter or darker shade of the color used for the jacket or a different color entirely. The darker-colored light colored jackets may even use white.
