Ian Kaler (United States, about 1870)

boy dresses
Figure 1.-- This CDV portrait shows an Ohio boy, Ira Kaler, about 1870. Ira wears a smocked dress with a large lace collar. At the time, boys' collar were mostly very small. There is matching cuff trim. It looks like a two-piece dress, but is probably one piece. Notice the front smocking. Ira has his curls cut before being breeched. That was the most common seqwuence, but some boys were breeched before their curls were cut. Ira looks to be about 3 years old. As was almost always the case at the time, he wears long stockings. The studio was Brenner in Bucyrus, Ohio.
