Our image of France is commonly dreived from French cities, especially Paris. This gives a modern, cosmopolitan image of the country and a much more unified than it was in fact. Provinces have plated a huge role in French history and at times were even more important than Paris itself. Some provinces had their own languages or sole a destinctive French. Gradually Paris grew in importnce and influence. Even so there were at the turn-of-the 20th century still notable provincial differences. Here we see a rural or village Breton family. They are wearing their destinctive fashions. We suspect that they dressed up in their best outfits. Notice the wooden clogs. We dount if they all wore these garments for everyday, especially the children. The NAZIs after defeating the French planned to use the surviving provincial cukture to destroy the country. Mashal Pétain though he could deal with Hitler. What the NAZIs were planning after winning the War was to annex areas of nortgern France. The remainder would be balcanized, partioning the country anong the provinces so a united France would no longer be capble of oppoing Gernany.
