French Family Outing (late 1930s)

Figure 1.-- The family snapshot is unidentified. We believe it was taken in France during the 1930s, probably the late 30s just before World war II. It looks to be a family outing. The girl wears a short white dress and white knee socks. Girls still wore dresses with few exceptions. The boys all wear various short pants outfits, two also with white kneesocks.

The family snapshot is unidentified. We believe it was taken in France during the 1930s, probably the late 30s just before World war II. It looks to be a family outing. I don't think it is a picnic as the family is rather formally dressed and mother has her purse. They look to be out in country somewhere along a road. Rather an unusual place to take a photograph. Picnic photographs are normally taken off the road. Perhaps they had a country home. Photographs here are usully taken with the home in the backgound. The men all wear business suits and ties and the ladies dresses or skirts. The children look to be about 5-10 years old. Given the adults present, they probably are from different, but related families. The girl has a big white hair bow which she wears with a short white dress, a locket, white kneesocks, and strap shoe. Girls still wore dresses with few exceptions. The boys all wear various short pants outfits. The youngest boy wears a dessy blouse with puff sleeves and a Peter Pan collar. Note the cross straps. I think that was done so a boy could wear a larger size he could grow into. When he is a little biggr he will wear them as regular strap shorts. He has white kneesocks that have fllen down and "T"-strap sandals. Another boy wears an all-whire outfit with white kneesocks and white strap shoes. The older boy wearS a white shirt and sporty tie with a pull-over sweatr and short pants. Note his kneesocks. They look to be grey kneesocks with colored bands at the top. This was a British style, part of a school uniform. I am not ebtirely sure why a French boy would wear them.
