I usually wore rompers as a little boy. I was born in 1947. I wore then from about age 1 through to when I began school at age 6. That would be 1948-53. This included the period when rompers were most popular in France. They were one of the most popular outfits for little boys. Only we boys wore them at the time. Little girls wore fresses. There are manu photographs of me in our family photograph album. And as a toddler and little boy I almost always wore rompers, both when dressing up and for play. I did not stop wearing rompers regularly until I began school at age 6 and even the sometimes wsore them at home or when dressing up.
Here we see Daniel during the summer, August 1949. Daniel was 2 years old. He is wearing a knitted romper. It was very common at the time to dress babies and toddlers in garments made in woollen material.
We see Daniel with his big brother Andre in a family snapshot about 1950. Daniel mostly wore romers as a little boy. The romper fit him pefectly like the Petit garçon model. Daniel is wearing a two piece romper, that was a classic summer 1950s style. This outfit was composed of a little blouse with puffed sleeves, Peter Pan collar, smocking embroderies, and the little puffed pants with bib, and oftten with a little pocket. All the French rompers were butonned at the croach, even for biger sizes, probably to give them a juvenil touch. The snapshot was taken along the Marne river."
Here I am in 1951 with my parents and big brother (figure 1). Notice father's beret. I am wearing a sweater (gilet) and print romper suit. He is wearing a shirt and sweater with short pants. The sswaters suggest it was a little chilly. I was 4 years old at the time. We are at our grandparents house in Chantilly. I am holding two toy American jeeps, it was only a few years after World War II and war toys wre still very popular.
We see Daniel at age 6 wearing a romper suit un 1953 just begore beginning school. He already had his hair cut.
