Daniel--Romper Material

Figure 1.--Here I am wearing a gilet and knit romper with my mother. We are going shopping. I look to be about 2 years old so it was probably 1949.

My rompers were made in various materials. Here my menory is axlittle hazy. I know thast my plain, play rompers were made in Vichy cloth (gingam). I also had knitted rompers. I think I mostly wore those when the weather got chilly, often with a little sweater (gilet). I am less sure what material was used for my dressy rompers. A French reader tells us, "I know a little about the fabrics used for baby garments in the 1950s. I am able to see that his romper is knitted in wool. That was very common classic diuring the 1930s-60s for infant garments and during the winter. Older boys might wear knitted rompers with a coat or a ' Gilet ' in this case, their mothers added knee socks. Long socking were not commonly wore in France, with the exceptionn of Alsace in the north. French children, both boys and girls - during the winter were well covered, excepted their knees. In the mountaneous boys might wear long pants."
