Jackets aew basically short coats, normally cut a litt;e below the waist. AS dictionat definition is 'an outer garment extending either to the waist or the hips, typically having sleeves and a fastening down the front.' This focuses on length, but jackets are normlly done in light weight fabric without any insulating padding for cool rather than cold weather. An exception id oadded ski jackets which are heavily paddedm but unlike ovrercoats cut quite short which is why it is called a jacket. We believe that it is a 20th century garment, but are just beginning to assess the history.
