French rompers
Figure 1.--Here we see a French family scene after World war II in the late-1940 or early-50s. The boy looks to be about 5-6 years old. He is dressed up for some special occassion. We have no idea what the occassiion was. He wears a dressy blouse with strap romper bottoms. It is a little difficult to tell because the rompers are a very light color and the blouse is white..

French raders have commented on the outfit.

A French reader writes, "Is it a classic or a suspenders rompers? I am not sure. . The classic romper one piece in age 6/7 years was was rather for boy dressed alike ' Petit garçon modéle" But they weren't any rules for a boy wearing a classic or suspender or butonned romper. It is simply according the fashion sence of the mother. I remember perfectly these rompers, I have often been dressed with these models. Classic romper one piece for boy 6 years. This model was exactly the same as the rompers for boys age 1/5 years. That means, very puffed, very short pants, baloon or straight sleeves, Peter Pan collar, Big bow in the back. Smockings or emboiteries in front. These romper were butonned at the croch and the mother or the nanny slip it on by the boy head. Suspender or butonned romper. What sure, 1945/1955 , these modele romper suit was always composed with a blouse butonned in front, wich had balloon or straight sleeves, often a Peter Pan collar. It was buttonned at each part of the waist. Without bow at the back. The model 3/5 years was always butonned at the croch by 3 or 4 little buttons, but the modele 6 years could get also. One slips on this romper by the legs."

Another French reader writes, "I would this boy is 6 years old, perhaps even age 7 years. Remember, children during the War did not eatright and even before the War did not have diets as good as modern children. Thus boys from the war and post-war era were were smaller yjn modern children. For instance a romper size 55 in 1950 was for a boy 6 years old, that means, a boy about 110/115 cm in height. To day a boy 6/7 years old measures more like 120 cm. Looking at my child heath record booklet, at 6 years and 3 months I measured 112 cm. It must be considered that I came from arosperous family and was fed normaly without any restriction. I wore a romper size 55 cm."
