French Boys Clothes: Unidentified Family (1930s-40s)

Figure 1.--We note an unidentified French family during the 1930s. We see one boy, perhaps the oldest, after a hair cut, presumably his first. Unfortunately we do not know his name or anything about the family. Perhaps our French readers will notice something about the family from the available snapshots. We think he was born in 1930. We first see him after a hair cut or at least a trim in 1932 (figure 1). We see quite a number of pre-school French boys with curls. This portrait is a good example. It is a baby picture without a top so it doesn't provide any clothing details. Notice the pendant. We are not sure just what the medalion or coin was.

We note an unidentified French family during the 1930s. Unfortunately we do not know their name or anything about the family. We think that they may have been a farm family. Perhaps our French readers will notice something about the family from the available snapshots. We think one boy, perhaps the oldest, was born in 1930. We first see him a year later after a hair cut or at least a trim (1932). It is a baby picture without a top so it doesn't provide any clothing details. Next we see him outside what we think is his home. This would place him in the Paris suburbs or a provincial town. It would also mean that he came from an affluent middle-class family. The snapshot shows him in long ghair wearing what looks like a bib-front dress. He looks a little unkempt, suggesting a working-class family. The other photographs, however, we think show that he came from a middle-class family.

Baby First Hair Cut (1932)

We note an unidentified French family during the 1930s. We see one boy, perhaps the oldest (figure 1), after a hair cut, presumably his first.

Home (1933)

Next we see the boy sitting outside what we think is his home (figure 1). This we think would place the family in the a provincial town. We think they may have been a farm family. It would also mean that he came from a well esrablished middle-class family. The snapshot shows him in long hair wearing what looks like a bib-front dress. He looks a little unkempt, suggesting a working-class family. He is much better dressed in the other photographs, however, I think show that the children came from a fairly affluent famuky, at least one in comfortable circumstances. The large home and grounds would certainly suggest that even though he is not dressed very smartly here.

Country Outing (1933)

Here we see the boy on an outing into the country, possibly a picnic. Cows are graving in the background. We think this may be the family farm. The boy wears a sun hat and one-piece play suit. He seems to have a large front curl. He looks a little concerned about the cows. Again we think it is the same boy, but we can not be certain. The photograhs, however, while not identified, are dated.

Garden (1936)

We see two snapshots of the boy in the family garden. One is alone with lots of flowers. The flowers suggest some kind of specual occassion. Another is on a bicycle (with training wheels) and his little sister. This looks like a play scene. We believe it is the same boy as in the photographs above, but we can not be sure. While their house looks a little plain, there were some beautiful gardens where the children could play. The boy is wearing fancy blouses with reuffled collars as a kind of juvenile suit.

First Communion (1941)

As might be expected from an affluent farm family, they appear to be staunchly Catholic. Here we have a snapshot of the boy in his First Communion suit during the 1941 Wptld war II German occupation. His mother is in mourning. Perhaps her husband was killed in the War. The boy wears a dark double breasted short pants suit. He seems to have aarge Eyon collar and wears both a large floppy bow and commenorative shoulder bow. He has white knee soixks and black shoes. He would be about 10-years old. We think he is the same boy show in the other photographs. It is a little difficult to make out his cap.
