I discovered your HBC site on the history of clothing for children and teenagers which is of great interest. I read that HBC was interested of the experiences of readers in different countries. Here is an account of my childhood experiences. J'ai découvert votre site sur l'histoire des vêtements pour enfants et adolescents, celui ci m'a interessé énormement. J'ai aussi lu que vous étiez interessé par des experiences vécues dans differents pays. Je puis témoigner de mon experience personnelle.

English Translation

I am French and was born in 1961. I lived the intermediate time during which very young boys began to be dressed in long trousers, but still some boys up 14-15 years old continued to wear short pants. I was born in a rather traditionnal, large famliy in which we boys wore hort pants all year untill the age 12 years. So I did not get my first long trouses until I was nearly 13 years old. Nevertheless we had to put on again our short pants from April to October until our 15 years old. I have to say I from a four-sons-family and I was the youngest of the four, because of this I had to wear the old short pants of my brothers. During this time, there some fashion variations with the years and short pants weren't specialy fashionable. The short pants I wore during the winter cut cut quite high above the knee and were made in Velvet or in flannel. During the summer we wore short pants in cotton or Tergal which were cut much shorter. In primary school I wore a smock in order to protect my clothing. (HBC note: At this time the smock styles were very short and in fact were often called cardigans.] When I entered collège ( secondary school ) a long smock reaching knee level was compulsary, it was in color beige for the girls and blue for the boys, and I had to wear it until the third class ( 14-15 years old ). [HBC has prepared an assessment of French grade levels for non-French readers.] For physical education, sport garment were compulsory, which were composed of blue shorts and a white T-shirt, in winter we replaced by a blue tracksuit which was tolerated. The tennis shoes were authorised only for sport activity, and the rest of the time we had to wear lather shoes. Thereafter I continue in a Technical school ( Lycée d'enseignement professionnel ). At my Lycée we were to wear blue working clothes during the manual courses and a blue smock fot the others courses. In this class section we were only boys. I can thus say that during the years 1975 to 1980 in France, teenagers wore still regularly shorts or bermudas (longish shorts) particularly during the mild days. Some boys wore shorts even during the winter; and nobody in the street turned the head to look us. I join two photographs to you, one is the day my solemn Communion (I am catholic). At that time boys and girls were dressed with a white alb. I was twelve years old (1975) I was thus wearing short trousers under my alb. The other photo was taken 1 year after in June, I had 13 years and half (1976). It was at the end of the school year during an outdoor class. Notice that all boys wear short shorts for school.

Je suis français et je suis né en 1961. J'ai vécu l'époque intermédiaire durant laquelle les très jeunes garçons commençaient à porter des pantalons longs; néanmoins certains continuaient à être en culotte courte jusqu'à 14-15 ans. Je suis né dans une famille nombreuse assez traditionnelle dont le port de la culotte courte nous était obligatoire toute l'année et cela jusqu'a l' âge de 12 ans. J'ai donc eu mon premier pantalon à presque 13 ans. Néanmoins nous devions renfiller nos culottes courtes du mois d'avril jusqu'au mois d'octobre et cela jusqu'à nos 15 ans. Je dis nous, car nous étions une fratrie de quatre garçons, et je suis le dernier des quatre. j'ai du porter les culottes courtes de mes frères pendant toutes ces années et étant entendu l'écart des années, ces dernières n'étaient plus forcement à la mode. Il s'agissait de culotte courte à mi-cuisses en Velours ou en flanelle pour l'hiver, l'été nous portions des culottes plus courtes en coton ou bien en Tergal. A l'école primaire je mettais des blouses afin de protéger mes vêtements. A mon arrivée au collège le port de la blouse longue jusqu'aux genoux était obligatoire, elle était beige pour les filles et bleu pour les garçons,et j'ai porté ce genre de blouse jusqu'en troisième. Durant les séances d'éducation physique une tenue de sport nous était imposée, elle se composait d'un short bleu et un maillot blanc, et l'hiver un survêtement bleu nous était toléré. Les baskets étaient autorisées seulement pour les séances de sport, et le reste du temps nous devions avoir des chaussures en cuir. Par la suite j'ai suivi une formation technique dans un lycée, nous devions alors porter un vêtement de travail bleu durant les cours d'atelier et une blouse bleu lors des autres cours. Dans la section nous n'étions que des garçons. Je peux donc affirmer que durant les années allant de 1975 à 1980 en France les adolescents portaient encore régulièrement des shorts ou des bermudas et cela particulièrement durant les beaux jours, néanmoins l'hiver ils étaient moins nombreux même si il y en avait encore beaucoup à en porter et personne ne se retournait dans la rue pour nous regarder. Je vous joins deux photos, une du jour de ma Communion solennelle (je suis catholique), A cette époque garçons et filles portaient une aube blanche .J'avais douze ans ( 1975 ) j'étais donc en culotte courte sous mon aube. L'autre photo a été prise un an après au mois de juin, j'avais 13 ans et demi ( 1976), c'était lors d'une sortie pour la fin de l'année scolaire, et on peut voir que tous les garçons sont en short court en la circonstance.
